Does anyone think that we are going to be hit by an asteroid in 2012?

I heard loads about it ages ago, now thereis no mention of it anywhere, except on strange, obscure websites. Theres scientific proof that its going to p close to the earth. I find it strange that there is no information about it anywhere. I think that if it were the case that it would hit, the goverment would keep schum about it to prevent world-wide lawlessness and panic.
