Genetic - Mice, back crossing and wildtype.?

i think the wildtype is simply used as a control. because the mice which are selectively bred for the laboratory may have traits that differ from the wiltype mouse. in this case, the wildtype mouse is used as a sample representative of the normal populatiom , eg what may happen to the selectively bred population may not happen to the "normal" population and vise - versa.
