What are signs of infection?

Yesterday, I was making a mother's day gift for my mom, and it involved pushing a wooden skewer in a hershey's kiss. I pushed too hard, and the skewer pierced my skin. I rinsed it, but i didn't have a bandage, so i just let it bleed a little. Today, the area around the cut is swollen and red. Do you think it could be infected? If so, what do you suggest I do?
